Source: Wikimedia Commons, U.S. Department of Defense FARC, a leftist rebel group that operates in Colombia, bombed the Cano Limon-Covenas oil pipeline, Colombia's second-largest pipeline based on volume. The pipeline, which carries 210,000 bo/d, is now shut down and the bombings also created a major spill that has contaminated two rivers. So far it looks like Colombia's oil exports won't be immediately affected as it has plenty of crude oil sitting in its storage facilities, but it's a major blow to a country already dealing with low prices and smaller tax revenue streams. We will have to see how this plays out and when/if the pipeline will be operational again. Ecopetrol (NYSE:EC) [state-run energy company] operates the pipeline and Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) transports some of it production through the Cano Limon-Covenas pipeline. Occidental stated its production in the country hasn't been affected so far. To read more about the energy sector click here!
