Source: BP's Statistical Review Of World Energy 2015 Presentation According to BP (NYSE:BP), the United States of America became the largest producer of liquids [crude oil and NGLs] last year, beating out Russia and Saudi Arabia. The graph says oil, but BP was referring to oil, shale oil, heavy oil from oil sands production, and NGLs [natural gas liquids]. Rising liquids production has substantially reduced America's dependence on energy imports, with surging natural gas production also playing a major role. In 2014, America pumped out 11.644 million barrels of liquids per day on average, while Russia and Saudi Arabia pumped out 10.838 million BBLs/d and 11.505 million BBLs/d, respectively. Going forward, there are plenty of reasons to believe America's energy renaissance will keep on chugging along in part because developing shale plays has become dramatically more economical.
